The LaBrea Tar Pits in Los Angeles, CA

www.tarpits.org/

The Page Museum at the LaBrea Tar Pits houses the Earth's richest and most important Ice Age Fossil collection. There are more than 30 complete skeletons of fossil mammals and birds on display as well as a working paleontology lab.

At LaBrea, crude oil has been seeping out of the ground for 40,000 years forming pools in low lying areas. Wandering animals would become trapped in the thick sticky pools becoming easy prey for the many predators and scavengers in the area, and then they in turn became trapped.

These pools preserved not only bones, but evidence of the entire ecosystem. From the smallest plants to the largest mammals, the fossilized remains number in the millions. The evidence is complete enough that scientists can reconstruct the environment that existed in the Los Angeles area 10,000-40,000 years ago.

Through the glass of the world famous Fish Bowl laboratory, visitors can see the scientists and volunteers clean, examine, restore, and catalog the fossils after they have been removed from the pits.
